Emo or gothic?

Because emo is less common and less well known than gothic, outsiders tend to confuse the two. Emo is a sub-genre of hardcore punk that emerged in Washington in the 1980s.

The gothic movement emerged in the late 1970's to early 1980's in the UK (so an English movement older than the American emo movement).

The gothic movement is basically a punk and new wave movement, inspired by German expressionist cinema, gothic fanaticism and literature, architecture, gothic thought.

In terms of clothing style, the fringe/hairline in front of the eyes is the major difference between an emo style and a gothic style.

Dressing in emo style, the youth trend

Dress, hairstyle, make-up, culture... Everything that surrounds the emo look interests you? First of all, you should know that the emo look comes from emo core (emotional hardcore) music, a musical style close to punk rock, but whose lyrics are sad, more personal, and not political. To give you an idea of where it comes from, we can mention the bands Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Weezer, Good Charlotte, etc.

Dress code

The main color of emo clothing is black. Even if sometimes the outfits are confused with the gothic style, emo clothing has its own peculiarities, and incorporates bright and fluorescent colors.

Purple or fuchsia pink colours can also be incorporated into the wardrobe. Skinny jeans (with or without a deliberate rip) or a man's sarouel (you can find them here), and white or black T-shirts with a V-neck are needed.

As for patterns, opt for skulls, preferably colored. You can also use a hoodie to complete the look. The hood will be the final touch to your outfit. It can be black or striped.

Shoes and accessories

You can wear Converse shoes. However, the most commonly used skate shoes, such as AirWalks and Vans, are always dark and preferably checked. Alternatively, you can choose trendy gothic shoes or creepers.

Nails, studs, checkerboards or white belts are needed to hold the trousers together. Piercings are essential for emo, especially emo lips and eyebrows.

Tattoo lovers can choose not only Asian genres, but also trendy stars. Finally, you can wear black or fluorescent bracelets with or without studs.

Hair and make-up to match emo clothes

Hairstyles are the basis of emo style. It doesn't matter if the person is a girl or a boy. Emo hairstyles are always rhymed with fringes that completely or mostly cover the eyes.

You will need to use gel to pull back the ends or hold the strands. Often choose a black base or, conversely, a peroxide blonde (or even white or grey) with very bright curls in blue, red, green or fuchsia.

Make-up is an integral part of the emo style. Simply outline your eyes with an eyelash pencil. For girls, you can apply red lipstick

And if you want to add more darkness to your style, we highly recommend checking out our collection of emo shirts.
