How do emo dress?

Clothing is a great way for many to express themselves, and the emo community is no exception. A more casual and sentimental style than a punk cousin, rooted in specific themes of pain, despair and introspection. Dress up as emo and show that you’re smart and cool.

What is emo?

Emo (also known as emo core) is a lyrically expressive, highly political style of punk music that focuses on catharsis and self-expression. The genre originated in the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene in the 1980s, known as “emotional hardcore” or “emocoa”, and was pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace.

It has its roots in the post-hardcore scene, straight edge movements and revolutionary summers. In the 1990s, emo evolved with other musical trends, from punks such as pop-punk and indie rock to bands such as Joe Breaker and Sunny Day Real Estate.

It also became more radical and aggressive through Screamo, influenced by bands such as Still Life, Indian Summer, Moss Icon, Orchid and Saetia. In the mid-1990s, many emo bands emerged from the Midwest and Midwestern United States, and many record companies began to specialize in the style.

Emo became popular with the general public in the early 2000s, with bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional, as well as Screamo via The Used, Thursday and Alexisonfire. After some commercial success, some emo bands signed to major labels and their style is a marketing product1.

In the late 2000s, emo’s popularity dropped, as defined by the mainstream media. Some bands changed the direction of the music, while others broke up. In “Emo Turn” 2, 3, 4 and 5, the band reconsidered the sonic and musical aesthetics of emo from the 1990s to the early 2000s, and emo pop and emo violence (a style at the crossroads of shouto and power violence) This began in the 2010s. Emo vs. trendy style

The emo and trendy style have proven to be one of the most dynamic expressions of personality and character in modern society. Through style, many people not only gain personal satisfaction, but also recognize the convenience of being identified by their clothing and behavior.

Emo style

Emo style has evolved from a subtle expression of personality to a trend that focuses on bold eyes, pale looks, skinny jeans, earrings, black cuffs and studded belts. Highly emotional, scary and highly introverted, the stereotypical individuals of the emo subculture have managed to make music and fashion work together, making style preferences the ultimate characteristic.

Trendy style

Trendy style has probably become one of the most unpredictable aspects of today’s world. Relying on a willingness to adapt at the last minute, this type of fashion is not a clear expression of one’s personality, but a conscious trace of what celebrities’ call “awesome”. Those who succumb to this diverse style belong to the typical breed of fanatics, jumping on the tide of rapidly changing hairstyles, clothes and accessories.

Dressing in emo style, the youth trend

Clothing, hairstyles, make-up, culture… Are you interested in everything emoruk? First of all, you have to know that the emergence of emo comes from emo core music (emotional hardcore). It is a style of music similar to punk rock, but the lyrics are sad, more personal and less political. To classify, you can talk about bands like Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Weezer, Good Charlotte and more.

Hairstyles and make-up

Hairstyles are the basis of emo styles. It doesn’t matter if the person is a girl or a boy. Emo hairstyles always rhyme with fringes that completely or almost completely cover the eyes. Gels should be used to restore the ends and maintain the lock.

A black base is often chosen, or conversely, a peroxide blonde (or even white or grey) with very light curls of blue, red, green and even fuchsia.  Make-up is an integral part of the emo style. Simply outline your eyes with an eyeliner. For girls, you can apply red lipstick.

Shoes and accessories

Shoes can be worn by Converse. However, the most commonly used are skate shoes such as Airwalks and Vans, which are always dark in color, preferably with checks. Alternatively, you can opt for gothic shoes or a trendy creeper. You will need a nail, stud, checkerboard or white belt to hold your trousers together.

Earrings are essential for emo, especially for lips and eyebrows. Tattoo lovers can choose not only Asian genres, but also trendy stars. Finally, you can wear a black or fluorescent bracelet with or without studs.

Dark style

First of all, you should know that there are two ways of approaching fashion. Some are based solely on the looks of others. People avoid indiscreet statements and dress to conform to the norm.

The second way of looking at fashion is an artistic approach. It assumes that the body is a work of art and can be decorated. Therefore, the style of dark clothes automatically emerges from one’s personality.

Therefore, having a dark style almost always means wearing black clothes and rejecting the dark atmosphere. Shoes, black dresses, dark blazer, gothic jewellery, etc. are the elements that contribute to the dark style. It is a style of dress that rejects the dark and solemn atmosphere and does not make anyone indifferent.

Studded belt.

The studded belt is a must-have in your emo wardrobe and will look great whenever you wear it. Choose a black, white or fluorescent belt with metal studs. The belt should be very thin. This allows you to wear two or three at a time for a more interesting textured look. However, keep in mind that these belts are not to be used to hold up your trousers. They are for decoration.

Black or fluorescent manicure

You can add decorations to your nails if you wish. You can varnish it on Friday evening so that it is ready and slightly worn on Monday morning before school. If you like, you can choose a neon shade like green or pink to add more color. It won’t ruin the look of your emo, I promise! Black is the recommended color. Some emo people also like to be painted red or pink or left untouched. Some emo pop bands like to panic! At the disco, nails are also painted black.  In general, long nails look more gothic than emo, so you have to cut (or bite) the shorter nails. You don’t have to worry about the nails. Emo rarely wears sandals or shows its feet.

Facial piercing

Face piercing are very emo and no one doubts your commitment to dressing up when a piece of metal dangles from your face to prove it. Many people pierce their lips. Pierced earrings can be centred, mounted on one side or attached on both sides. Eyebrow piercings and nose piercings are also very cool. If you want to make the piercings less noticeable, consider piercing your tongue or putting multiple piercings in the same ear.  If you want to get pierced, make sure the piercing or tattoo parlor you select is well established. Also make sure you are proactive in the care your piercings need. The last thing you want is an infection in your piercings, especially your facial ones!

If you are under 18 years of age, you must first seek permission. Some piercing placements require the consent of a relative before placing them on minors. Therefore, in this case, your parents may need to be with you.
